Reply with quote | #31 | Gender roles have changed over the centuries . Mainly because of the advances in technology and the need for a two income household within a family. __________________ "Who is going to check ME Boo??" ~Sheree of RHOA

Reply with quote | #32 | I know a couple of "house dads". It's becoming more and more common. I have a friend who started photography as a hobby while she was a stay at home mom. Well she became extremely successful rather quickly. It was obvious she was going to make WAY more money than her husband could. So he stays home with their two children. I think it's wonderful and shows a lot of confidence on his part. __________________ Making the decision to have a child is momentous. Yeah you are right, Es, it has become more of a frequent thing. __________________ ~(p v q)

I'm Mr Mom, while my wife works during the day. She makes good money, and gets very good benefits, so it just makes more sense for me to stay home. Neither of us had the heart to send our daughter to day care. I still get to work part time at night, which is great for my sanity. __________________ I am what I am. |

Good for you! I think that children who grow up and spend a lot of time with their parents have an advantage; socially, they'll be ready to handle it when they hit school, and they develop a strong bond that will last forever. I'm not saying that kids who go to day care are headed for an unhealthy upbringing (I had to do that with all my boys), but I know that if I could have stayed home, I would have...

Reply with quote | #36 | The notion that the dad should go work and the mom should stay at home are societal gender constructs. But, then again, they could be leftovers from early human society. However, it's not like we need the big strong men to go out and hunt for meat to feed the family while the woman picks fruits and vegetables close to home with a baby strapped to her back and a toddler in tow.
As society advances, so do humans. I don't like it when people look down on a situation where the woman earns more and the husband stays at home and tends to the children. It doesn't mean she is more masculine than she should be and it doesn't mean that he has been emasculated. It just might make more sense, like what has already been shared in this thread.
In regard to what Launcelot and LaCosa brought up, I'd just like to add that there are some men AND WOMEN who let their spouse/significant other work, while they sit at home and DON'T take care of the kids/house/errands, etc. If both parties are doing their part, then I don't think it should matter what part it is that they're playing.
On the note of stay-at-home dads, Dr. Laura (you've probably heard of her) is a big proponent of one parent staying at home with young kids. She has lots of stay-at-home mom resources at her website. AND, she's got some stay-at-home dad resources, as well.
